Are you planning a vacation? Would you like to do some good while you’re away? You’re not alone.
Most people have a difficult time finding worthwhile, trustworthy opportunities to give service while traveling.
I’d like to change that, so I’m devoting this portion of my blog as a resource to help connect people with projects or organizations abroad that you can trust with your time, your resources and your holiday.
If you know of an opportunity for service abroad, please fill out the form below and let me know! I’ll only post opportunities that I have either interacted with myself, or opportunities others have vetted.
Let’s grow the list and do some good!
Trusted organizations for travel volunteering:
(Families Helping Families Mexico)
Friends of mine have traveled to Mexico with this company in order to build homes for families in Mexico. They had an amazing experience taking their entire family down South to volunteer and so can you!
Vlog report of the event: http://newmexicast.com/nm0042-families-helping-families
This group specializes in volunteer travel for single LDS men and women. I have several friends who have participated in these tours in Nepal, Guatemala and Kenya. The costs are very reasonable and pay for the service projects you’ll be participating in. All fees paid are tax deductible.
This is a fantastic organization which has been around for years and years! I ran into a group of Friendship Force-rs while in Myanmar (actually through a serendipitous coincidence I found myself on two different flights with them!) and they were absolutely lovely. Hailing from chapters all over the globe, these wonderful people told me all about their organization and their mission to travel and give service while doing that. The group I met brought a heap of medical supplies for hospitals in Yangon. Join a chapter, start your own, do some good and meet like-minded people from all over the globe!
Global Service Projects and Aide Organiztions:
The Bali Children’s Project
This is a wonderful organization geared toward the education of children. Sponsorship (child specific and teacher) and Volunteer opportunities available. Tax exempt, non-profit foundation based in Bali and out of California.
An ongoing list of needs and projects for the Girasol region of Peru can be found at the link below. The head of the website can offer volunteers housing if needed.
The Given Tree
This phenomenal organization has sponsored projects all over the globe from Tyhoon relief in the Phillippines to repairs to a school boat in a floating village in Cambodia. Their current project is medical and dental aid visit to Zimbabwe, where medical and dental attention and care will be given to locals. The team will be taking a portable Dental unit to donate to a mobile dental clinic which will serve the local people. The dental team is headed up by a college friend of mine (and one of my favorite people on the planet), Dr. Brandon Erickson, who has done volunteer dental work in various parts of the world. The project is currently in need of monetary support (easy donations through their website via paypal) to purchase supplies for the portable dental unit. The team may also be in search of one additional nurse to join the expedition. Contact The Given Tree directly for more information.
LDS – White Shirts, Photos of Christ and Reading Glasses for Vanuatu
This could be a great service project for your ward or branch!
The Saints on the South Pacific Islands of Vanuatu have great need for men’s white dress shirts for church. Used or new. All sizes needed. Ties also appreciated.
Laminated photos of the Savior for homes and huts would be a luxury to have. (Laminated as paper disintegrates in the harsh, wet climate of Vanuatu very quickly.)
Lastly, reading glasses of all strengths are needed. Many Ni-Van saints have beautiful sets of scriptures in the local dialect (Bislama) but are unable to see clearly enough to read them.
Other Worthwhile Projects:
My Story Matters is committed to giving the gift of story to individuals in need by publishing uplifting, inspiring, and motivational stories of faith, courage, and talent for individuals who could not otherwise do so for themselves.
Please use the contact form to email Christy directly for directions on how and where to send these items to Vanuatu.
